You can find the updated treasurer’s reports under the minutes section of our website. Please note that our checking account has erroneous charges for account analysis. I am trying to work with the bank to have these removed. When National City changed it’s policies earlier this year it placed our checking account into “Commercial Checking”. When this problem has been reconciled you will see the updated reports posted. Thank you for your patience.

Change is afoot at the AORN Fox Valley Chapter!

In commemoration of our fifth-year anniversary on the Internet, our chapter proudly presents the all-new redesign of our website! As one of the first chapters on the Web, it’s only fitting we celebrate five years with another cutting-edge design that meets our chapter’s needs.

Here’s a rundown of why we think our new site is special:

And perhaps the best reason of all:

Maintenance links are in the sidebar, and only minimal training is required to run the site. We want to give the website back to the nurses — from posting news to uploading letters to showing off photos. Details on site maintenance will be revealed at the next chapter meeting. Don’t miss it!

We hope you’re happy with it. We certainly are.

Sunday, March 19, 2006

Sunday, November 7, 2004

In the Thanksgiving mood, our newest letter from our president, Linda Walter, has just arrived. You can either find it here or check it out and previous letters from the president in our Letters section. Because of recent technical/Web site difficulties, it’s a good one to read up on and catch up. Details for November’s meeting will be coming shortly — stay tuned for that!

Tuesday, November 2, 2004

It’s been a tough ride for the AORN Web site these past few weeks and your webmaster sorely apologizes for any inconveniences, in particular the details for the October chapter meeting. Although your webmaster created the Web site, it is hosted on a private company’s server.

This means the Web site is copied onto a different computer that has the ability to deliver the Web site to the Internet. Unfortunately, this company has been having problems with its computers so our Web site has been temporarily moved to a new location until things can get resolved.

Our service won’t be 100% but it should be much, much better. Thanks to all who have been sticking it out; your patience is greatly appreciated. In the mean time, stay tuned for details on our November meeting — coming soon! P.S.: Remember to vote today!

Sunday, September 19, 2004

Also just in is a newsletter from our new chapter president, Linda Walter. All members are encouraged to check it out as she goes over some of our upcoming events and meetings. The letter can be found in the letters section.

Saturday, September 18, 2004

Welcome back for another year of AORN Fox Valley Chapter! If you’re not a member and haven’t attended one of our monthly chapter meetings, by all means, we invite you to them and check out what our organization is all about. If you are a member, welcome back. We’ve got a few updates, namely our September chapter meeting details. Linda Deering, RN Chief Nurse Officer, will be speaking on “Nurses Leading Healthcare” on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at Edward Hospital Education Center. Details are available in the events section (dinner will not be served).

We also have the schedule for all of this year’s and next year’s meetings, also in the events section. Contrary to an earlier posting, we will not have a December meeting, so erase that in case you wrote it down. Lastly, be sure to familiarize yourself with the chapter’s new officers in the members section as well as our meeting sponsors, also in the members section.

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

The June installation dinner went smashingly. Chapter members enjoyed a fine dinner and witnessed the induction of Linda Walter by Barb Harp, former president of AORN Fox Valley Chapter. Appetizers were sponsored by Dario, a representative from Ethicon, a company in the a global medical device industry. Great food was had by all.

No meetings are scheduled for the summer; AORN Fox Valley Chapter will be on vacation until its September chapter meeting. Be sure to read the last letter from our outgoing president Kelly Hofmann with closing remarks about her time as president. Also a big thank-you to all members who checked the Web site in its days of less frequent news; our webmaster has safely returned from his studies overseas. It’s great to be back; looking forward to fall.

Monday, May 24, 2004

Details about June’s installation dinner are now coming in. The dinner will be at the Villa Olivia Country Club on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $25.00 and the cocktail hour will be sponsored by a to-be-announced vendor.

The chapter requests that all members interested in going R.S.V.P. with Cindi Becker at (630) 235-6280. Please note that it is mandatory to R.S.V.P. if you plan on attending the installation dinner because of meal preparations. Also, the minutes to the May Chapter Meeting have now been posted in the “Minutes” section.

Friday, May 14, 2004

In light of the chapter’s upcoming meeting, chapter president Kelly Hofmann has a new letter for us. In it, she thanks national AORN president Bill Duffy for coming to our April meeting and all of the many chapter members who attended — we had a wonderful turnout, despite the terrible weather.

Kelly also runs down some of the key points of Bill’s lecture for those who were unable to attend. The agenda of May’s chapter meeting and a message about Nurses’ Week are also in the letter. We hope to see everyone at the May meeting!

Friday, April 30, 2004

It’s been awhile definitely, but the AORN Fox Valley Chapter website is here to stay. On behalf of the president, the chapter apologizes to its members about the sore lack of updates. You can expect more timely updates in the future. And in keeping that promise, we have just received the chapter’s newest newsletter from our president, Kelly Hofmann.

The April newsletter covers such topics as the 51st AORN Congress in San Diego, the speaker for the May meeting, and a few words of thanks from Kelly as she will soon retire from the role of president. We urge chapter members to think about which positions they would like to apply for. We might also provide recaps of the March meeting with Bill Duffy. Stay tuned!

Saturday, February 28, 2004

Saturday, February 28, 2004

An update from our chapter president reveals information about the chapter’s next monthly meeting in March. John Batchler from the 3-M Corporation will speak on hand asepsis on March 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Education Center of Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. Again, we encourage all chapter members to attend this meeting.

Also, in April, our chapter will welcome Bill Duffy, the national AORN president, to our monthly meeting! Details for this meeting and a short biography/invitation are listed below.

William J. Duffy, RN, MJ, CNOR

As President, Bill serves as the official representative of the Association and presides at all meetings of the House of Delegates, the Board of Directors, and the Executive Committee. The President serves a one-year term as President-elect immediately preceding the one-year term as President. As President-elect, Bill observed and assisted the President in preparation for assuming the duties and responsibilities of that office.

Bill also serves on the Association’s Board Committees, including the Finance & Audit Committee and the Executive Committee, in addition to also serving on the Association’s Bylaws Committee, Industry Partners, and Chapter Visit Task Force. His other accomplishments include (information cited from AORN.org):

AORN Fox Valley Chapter #1412 invites you to join Bill Duffy and other chapter members in welcoming him to our April chapter meeting. The meeting will be on April 20th at 6:00 p.m. in the Education Center of Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. Directions are available in the “Events” section.

Dario Jaramillo will be presenting “Harmonic Scalpel and Endomechanical Staple Lines,” worth 2 CME credits.

Also, AORN Congress is rapidly approaching, scheduled for March 21-25, 2004. If you’re interested, details will be at the meeting. And the chapter also requests members clear off their calendars to make it to April 20’s meeting, when the national AORN president Bill Duffy will be making an appearance at our chapter’s meeting! Fundraising and thoughts from our president is also included in this month’s newsletter so give it a good look over.

Monday, February 2, 2004

For those who have been wondering about the chapter’s news and the website, your webmaster sorely apologizes for the lack of updates. As a part of his course work at his university, he is spending the next few months studying abroad in the United Kingdom. However, (with added planning) he is sure he can continue his duties and bring the chapter its news (even overseas!).

For those who went to the January 20, 2004, meeting, “Documentation and Legal Issues in OR Nursing” presented by Legal Nurse Consultant Tamara Ellinghausen, RN, we hope you learned something from it. Although late, we have a flyer for the meeting in Adobe PDF format. Details have yet to arrive for the chapter meeting on February 17 but stay tuned for those.

Wednesday, December 17, 2003

Our Chapter President, Kelly Hofmann, has another holiday newsletter for us. Among the updates are reminders about Congress in March, January’s educational guest speaker, multispeciality conferences, and thoughts on the holiday season. No chapter meeting is scheduled for December, but stay tuned after the new year. Happy Holidays to all chapter members!

Monday, December 1, 2003

We have an update for January’s meeting: Bill Duffy will unfortunately not be joining us as guest speaker for January’s chapter meeting but he will be joining us as guest speaker for April’s meeting next year. At this point in time, Bill will have already been inducted as president of the national AORN organization, so we definitely encourage all chapter members to attend next April’s meeting!

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

The Chapter’s new secretary, Dawn Dormitorio, has submitted the meeting minutes to November’s meeting. If you missed out on this meeting, then we have the minutes posted so you can catch up. Also, if you haven’t been reading our President’s newsletters, then this would be a good time to catch up on those and see what’s going on with the chapter.

Also, we remind chapter members the December meeting is for board members, and to also keep in mind the January 20th meeting — Bill Duffy, president-elect of the national AORN organization will guest for us. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving to all chapter members!

Tuesday, November 18, 2003

Our dutiful secretary, Linda Walter, has submitted the meeting minutes to last month’s meeting, the Chapter’s October meeting. If you missed out on it, we have the minutes here so you can catch up. It is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, in Room 305 of Edward Hospital.

Saturday, November 15, 2003

Looking ahead to the Chapter’s January meeting, AORN Fox Valley Chapter is very pleased to welcome our next guest speaker Bill Duffy, president-elect of the national AORN organization! The meeting will be on January 20, 2004, in the Education Center of Edward Hospital at 6 p.m. We encourage all chapter members to clear out their calendars for that night so they can all make a great impression for the future national AORN president.

Bill Duffy, RN, BSN, MJ, CNOR, was elected president-elect at AORN’s 50th annual Congress in Chicago this past March. He is also the assistant vice president of perioperative services at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Corp, Ill. To brush up on his biography, click here for more information from AORN’s national website.

Wednesday, November 12, 2003

The Chapter has received a new letter from the president in Adobe PDF format for the month of November. This newsletter covers a lot of reminders in the last letter but reminds chapter members about the increased cost in membership dues. The dues will increase by $5 per year to support increasing costs of the chapter. This will be reflected on each member’s membership application.

Please keep in mind Perioperative Nurses Week and AORN’s 51st Congress next year, which will be held from March 21-25. Also, please remember about next week’s November chatper meeting, which will be on Tuesday the 18th. A representative from “Intuitive Surgical” will be speaking about the new robotic “daVinci Surgical System.” Please try to make it to the next meeting because we’d love to see you there.

Monday, November 3, 2003

AORN Fox Valley Chapter hopes everyone is excited about our next big event: a field trip to Arrow Medical Supply, Inc.’s repair instrument factory! The Chapter has received updates in the form of documentation: the 2003-2004 Bylaws and 2003-2004 Policy Manual are now up in Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF file formats in the Members section. It is suggested all members briefly review these items to become familiar with the chapter’s workings. We also have in our Members section the Education Sponsors for our meetings. Please review these as it’s good to know just how our chapter operates from month to month. A big thank you goes out to our sponsors!

Friday, October 17, 2003

We have an update from our chapter president, Kelly Hofmann! The chapter is currently planning the 51st AORN Congress trip to San Diego, Calif. Congress is scheduled to be between March 21-25 next year. The chapter could use a few members to represent it, so if you’re interested, please try to attend the next meeting and come with questions. Speaking of meetings, our next one will be next Tuesday, October 21, and the November meeting will be Tuesday, November 18. There will be no regular December meeting.

Next week’s meeting will feature Dr. Craig Smith, urologist, speaking on “New concepts and Therapies for Urinary Incontinence.” Chapter members have also been hard at work on selling raffle tickets as our primary fundraiser — we encourage other members to do the same! Tickets are available at the meeting next week, so please be sure to make it. News on all of this and more are available in our newsletter, which can be downloaded in either Microsoft Word file format or Adobe PDF format. We hope to see everyone at next week’s meeting!

Tuesday, October 7, 2003

AORN Fox Valley Chapter has decided that raffle ticket sales will be our fund-raiser for 2003-2004. We ask that each active member sell a minimum of 10 books. Second prize is a $50 gift certificate to “Lettuce Entertain You” and third prize has yet to be determined.

We also have a picture of the quilt to be given to the chapter member who sells the most tickets in Adobe PDF format. Saturday, September 6, 2003

AORN Fox Valley Chapter welcomes everyone back from a summer vacation! We hope you got plenty of relaxation and are geared up for a new year with AORN. In doing that, our first chapter meeting will be the Tuesday after this coming one on September 16, 2003. Details about the upcoming meeting are available in a flier prepared by our own president, Kelly Hofmann. This will be the first meeting headed by Kelly, so don’t miss out.

Wednesday, June 25, 2003

Not more than one week after our chapter installs a new president, does she write her first newsletter! Kelly Hofmann, installed as the chapter’s new president for the year, gives her first letter detailing what she would like to see from the chapter and its members in the upcoming year.

There is even an accurate recap of the Installation night if you couldn’t make it. The letter is available in the “Letters” section as “Newsletter #7” or you can go straight to it here.

Wednesday, June 18, 2003

June’s installation dinner went off without a hitch last night as a good number of Fox Valley Chapter members made an appearance. A big thank-you goes out to all of those who attended the dinner and ceremony. Dawn Kladis, former chapter president passed the torch (literally) last night to Kelly Hofmann, former vice-president, installing her as president.

Hofmann, an operating room nurse at Delnor-Community Hospital for more than 15 years, said she would try hard to bring new members to the chapter and try new things for the chapter in the upcoming year. And because of restructuring, the vice-president position has been eliminated in favor of a president-elect position. Also, updates will be scarce this summer because the chapter does not meet again until September 15, so mark those calendars (the Events page has been updated with future meeting dates) and have a great summe

Saturday, June 7, 2003

Because June’s meeting (like last year) will be the Installation meeting for the new members taking office for the coming year, it will be held at the same location: the Villa Olivia Country Club on Rte. 20 and Naperville Road in Bartlett, Ill., on June 17, 2003, at 6:00 p.m. If you need directions, we have provided a map for you as well. The phone number of the club is (630) 289-1000. Because this is the last meeting before our meeting-less summer, we encourage as many people as possible to make an appearance. Dinner may also be served — we’re still working on details as they become available.

Sunday, June 1, 2003

Updates have been far and few between lately, but a few housekeeping items have been taken care of. First, the members list has been updated! This update has been a long time coming and all names have been checked and verified for membership (also, minor spelling errors were caught — so please check to see if your name is correct, and please e-mail the webmaster at webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org if it’s not).

Also, the meeting minutes for October of last year (yeah, we missed the ball on this one) was put up. We will be trying to harder to obtain electronic monthly minutes in the future. Last, details on our June meeting will hopefully be arriving soon.

Monday, May 12, 2003

Chapter member Donna Preisler has also contributed her congress report from AORN’s 50th Annual Congress to the website now. You can find that in the “Events” section or by simply clicking here.

Tuesday, April 29, 2003

We have a new letter from our President, Dawn Kladis, available in the “Letters” section. As Dawn’s term as president winds to a close, she has a few parting words you should hear.

Friday, April 25, 2003

Chapter member Kelly Hofmann has contributed her congress report from AORN’s Congress in addition to two more pictures, so please send Kelly a thank-you. You can find her report by clicking here or find it and the pictures in the “Events” section.

Friday, April 11, 2003

Chapter member Beth Parker has also contributed her congress report from AORN’s 50th Annual Congress to the website now. You can find that in the “Events” section or by simply clicking here. Our chapter webmaster is still encouraging anyone else who attended congress to submit pictures, reports, or anything else you might think is relevant.

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

Information for the April chapter meeting is now available in the “Events” section. Dr. Juan Bonilla, a cardiac surgeon from Cardiac Surgery Associates, S.C., will be presenting “Women & Heart Disease” on April 15. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. and Dr. Bonilla will present afterward. The meeting will be at Edward Hospital’s Education Center. We hope to see everyone there.

Tuesday, April 1, 2003

Chapter member Claire Erickson was kind enough to submit her congress report from AORN’s 50th Annual Congress! You can find that in the “Events” section or by simply clicking here. Our chapter webmaster highly encourages anyone else who attended congress to also submit her reports to webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org.

Saturday, March 15, 2003

The week of AORN Congress has come and gone, but we have some pictures for those of you that didn’t make it. These photos are from the Foundation Gala at Chicago’s Union Station on March 24. The photos are available in the “Events” section; just click the “Events” button on the left to check them out. These photos come courtesy of chapter member Donna Preisler, so next time you see Donna, tell her thanks!

We’ll also hopefully be having some other AORN Congress stuff up in the upcoming week or two, so check back soon. The official AORN website still has the highlights of the week in case you’d still like to take a look; click here for that.

Wednesday, March 12, 2003

We’ve got an update for the March 18th meeting in the form of a flier by our Vice-President, Kelly Hofmann! Sue Himpelmann RN, MSN, & Director of OR Education from Victory Memorial Hospial of Waukegan, Ill., will be speaking to us about “Nursing Perspectives in the Use of Fibrin Sealants.” Remember, it will be March 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Edward Hospital’s Education Center. For directions/details, go to our “Events” section by clicking the Events button on the left.

Also remember we require those attending to R.S.V.P. Again, details about that are in the “Events” section. Lastly, we have a new poll! Please vote today, and thank you to all those who voted in the last poll. Apparently, we’d like to have more field trips, and in second place, we’d like to have more guest speakers, and fittingly nobody voted for more dues.

Friday, February 28, 2003

Well, there hasn’t been many updates here lately, so I thought to interject one of my own. The 50th AORN Annual Congress is quickly approaching and it would benefit members (going or not) to brush up on what happens over there. In browsing AORN’s website with the part about Congress (which you can check out by clicking here), I came across the fact that AORN offers Chicago Tours (for a price), but they put together a lot of things for you; check details about that here. And if you’d like to get an idea about what the week will entail in general, there is a general schedule found here.

Monday, February 17, 2003

If you tried to gain access to the website over the weekend and for most of today, you probably noticed some strange messages. That’s because the website name expired on the 14th a few days ago (remember that website names can be purchased for only a year until they expire), so your webmaster went off and bought the name for one more more year, although he doesn’t necessarily know if a website for one more year was something to be desired. So if you’re reading this now, great, we’re back online and your webmaster apologizes for any confusion. See you at the meeting tomorrow!

Sunday, February 9, 2003

Information about our February meeting is now available in the “Events” section. You can see more information about that by simply clicking the large “Events” button on the left. Hope to see you all at the meeting and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Saturday, February 1, 2003

Our new president’s letter, letter #5, is in so be sure to read that in our Letters section. The letter is about AORN Congress this March, so it’s important everyone knows what’s going on. Also, apparently, there were some errors in the listing of our future chapter meeting dates. If you copied them down before, check out the correct ones now in the Events section.

Thursday, January 23, 2003

The chapter is now requesting that members coming to the meeting e-mail the webmaster at webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org or call Beth at (630) 527-3965 and leave a voice message. We need to have accurate counts for food because of budget cuts. Members need to respond by the Thursday before the meeting.

Wednesday, January 15, 2003

One of our chapter members, Etta McDuffee, is looking for some input on a survey she is conducting about preoperative hair removal and she would appreciate your input! Click here to fill out the survey. Thank you for helping her out!

Sunday, January 5, 2003

The chapter would like to wish everyone a happy 2003 new year! Keep those resolutions!

Monday, December 23, 2002

Our president-elect, Kelly Hofmann has a new e-mail address from which she is now available in case a member needs to get a hold of her: kelly@aornfoxvalley.org. Also, we have a new poll to the right, so we’d appreciate it very much if you took the time to vote today. We thank everyone who participated in the last poll — your input was greatly appreciated!

Sunday, December 22, 2002

All attendees of the Arrow dinner at the November chapter meeting will receive one CEU when attending the our January chapter meeting. Also, another CEU may be available when taking a quiz from Codman that requires signing in. Also, we need volunteers from each hospital of the chapter to form an annual fund raiser committee. Volunteers will meet in January to start planning for 2003.

If you are interested, please e-mail the webmaster at webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org with a short message confirming that you would like to become a member of the committee and your name at the bottom. And on one last note, the chapter would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a happy new year as well!

Saturday, December 21, 2002

Our chapter is looking for a member to maintain the website! We’ll need someone to keep the site up-to-date with news, events, minutes, etc. If you’re interested in this position, please e-mail our webmaster at webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org. Our current webmaster isn’t going anywhere, but we’d like to see if there is someone else who would be interested.

Friday, December 6, 2002

Back by popular demand, is the falling snow graphic. We hope that this gets you in the spirit of the holiday season! (Can you believe I’ve been doing this for one year already?)

Tuesday, November 26, 2002

The votes are in! The delegates who will be representing our chapter at AORN Congress 2003 in Chicago in March will be Pauline Cornish, Beth Parker, and Linda Walter. Congratulations to our delegates and thank you to those who applied. By the way, we’ll be getting details on our next chapter meeting shortly — it will be something informal, so check back here for future details.

Friday, November 22, 2002

AORN Fox Valley Chapter wishes everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving break! Be sure to eats lots of turkey! :-) And in the spirit of tradition on this website, click here to read a little history about the first thanksgiving.

Monday, November 18, 2002

If you’d like to reach our chapter president, Dawn Kladis, she has a new e-mail address: dawn@aornfoxvalley.org. Hopefully, this will make communication within the chapter much easier with a separate e-mail address for the president. An e-mail address for the president-elect and maybe even e-mail addresses for the members of the chapter who attend the meetings most, might happen, so look out for that in the future. Our president’s new e-mail address was added and then hopefully other new e-mail addresses will be added to our “Links” section.

Saturday, November 16, 2002

AORN Fox Valley Chapter celebrates Perioperative Nurse Week, from November 10 to 16, 2002. Formerly known as “OR Nurse Week,” the new name more accurately reflects “the broad spectrum of patient care services provided to surgical patients by perioperative registered nurses.” This year’s theme is “Perioperative Nurses: Your Safety is Our Job … We Take it Seriously.” To find out a little more about this week, visit a section from AORN’s official website by clicking here. Oh, and they got some of the cutest stuff to buy from for the week at this website.

Sunday, November 10, 2002

Oh would you check out the brand spanking new voting poll to the right! Isn’t it beautiful? After many an hour sitting at the computer, your webmaster figured out how to create a poll and have the results display after clicking the button. Is that not the coolest thing? Go ahead and give the voting poll a test spin, and be honest about your answer. If there is an issue and the chapter would like to see how its memebers feel about it, that can be posted by e-mailing our webmaster at his new e-mail address at webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org. Look at some of the older news below for information about the webmaster’s new e-mail address.

Saturday, November 9, 2002

In a continuing effort to move away from America Online, our webmaster has a new e-mail address! The new e-mail adddress is webmaster@aornfoxvalley.org. Hopefully, this will be easier to remember than aornfoxvalley@aol.com because the new e-mail address is just “webmaster” and then the website address after it. However, you can still e-mail the webmaster at the old address, but let’s try and move away from that address because the new one sounds so much more professional. ;-)

There have been even more little changes in the details (but they make a big difference) for our November Chapter meeting. There are too many list here so I’ll just tell you to check out the “Events” section to know what’s going on. Please check the details out carefully because we don’t want to leave anyone behind!

You may not have the day off, but AORN Fox Valley Chapter wishes everyone an enjoyable Veterans’ Day weekend.

Wednesday, October 30, 2002

It would be good for the delegate candidates to support our seminar this Saturday, November 2nd. Unfortunately, some of the delegates are not. If you would like to know who is supporting the seminar that will produce the funding to send the delegates to AORN 2003 Congress before you vote, please call Vicky Kuzel at (847) 592-7486.

Friday, October 25, 2002

More details about our exciting, off-site November chapter meeting are now available in the “Events” section. We’ll be heading over to the Arrow Medical Supply’s instrument repair factory in Bensenville, taking a tour, having some dinner, and asking some questions. We would really appreciate you joining us, and all you have to do is RSVP with our webmaster to go. All those details are in the “Events” section. Hope to see you there! As just a reminder, here are the important upcoming dates:

November 1: Last day to vote for AORN 2003 Congress Delegates November 2: The Cutting Edge-Innovative Surgery Seminar November 19: Arrow Instrument Repair Tour

This update serves as a reminder on The Cutting Edge-Innovative Surgery Seminar: it is this Saturday on November 2! We would really like to see as many people from AORN Fox Valley Chapter there as possible. If you are interested in attending, please R.S.V.P. with our webmaster. Details on how to do that are in the “Events” section. Remember: this Saturday!

Tuesday, October 15, 2002

There has been a slight miscommunication in the voting procedure. The previous policy still holds except that instead of two (2) delegates to be voted for AORN Congress 2003 in Chicago, you can pick a total of three (3)! That means if you voted for two people, you are still eligible to vote for one more candidate. If you haven’t voted yet, then you are eligible and encouraged to vote for three delegates you think would be appropriate for AORN Fox Valley Chapter’s representation.

Also, the “Events” section has been updated. Much more information about our next event, the November seminar, “The Cutting Edge: Innovative Surgery for Today” is available in a brochure in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat format. We encourage you to look through that brochure before deciding to attend November’s seminar.

Saturday, October 12, 2002

The voting procedure for the 50th Annual AORN Congress has changed! Instead of an online voting poll (which is subject to error), simply send an e-mail to our webmaster at aornfoxvalley@aol.com. You may choose only two (2) of the candidates listed below to go to AORN Congress in 2003. In the body of the e-mail, please type your two choices and at the end of the e-mail message, please type your name and that’s all there is to it. Please make your vote count by voting today, but please remember the last day for voting is November 1, 2003.

If you don’t know much about AORN Congress 2003, then check out this link from the official website by clicking here which gives some great information about it; in particular that it will be in our (near) hometown of Chicago from March 23 until March 27, 2003. The candidates on the AORN Ballot for a Delegate to 2003 Congress are…

Lastly, this update serves as a reminder for our October chapter meeting coming up this Tuesday. If you haven’t e-mailed our webmaster about attending, please do so today. More details about that are in the “Events” section. (P.S. Please try to vote this November in the general election as well, our government needs your vote!)

Tuesday, October 1, 2002

If you plan on attending the October chapter meeting, please R.S.V.P. with our webmaster, so we know how many people to expect so we can prepare enough food for dinner. Details about that are on the “Events” page. Also the ballot to send delegates to the 50th Annual AORN Congress in 2003 is online in Microsoft Word document format. Please return those to Beth Parker by October 13th. Details for that are also on the “Events” page.

Sunday, September 29, 2002

If any chapter members have seen the old workshop folder or the installation book, we ask you to bring it to the meeting or drop either of the items off at Edward Hospital, no questions asked. Thank you. On another note, I’ve added a daily quote area to the top of the website. The quote will be updated everyday automatically with a new inspirational quote.

Thursday, September 26, 2002

There are a few minor updates in the “Events” section about October’s monthly chapter meeting and November’s seminar. If you are interested in attending, you will need to send an R.S.V.P. to our webmaster. Please see the “Events” section for more details. Also, much of the news on this page has been moved to the archive because this page was getting rather lengthy. This news and all older news are in the news archive, whose link is at the bottom of this page.

Wednesday, September 25, 2002

New information for the October monthly chapter meeting is up so please be sure to mark your calendars and do your best to make it. There is also an announcement for a November seminar, entitled “The Cutting Edge-Innovative Surgery.” The seminar costs $45 for AORN members and $55 for non-AORN members and includes lunch. Details for both of these events are in the “Events” section.

Wednesday, September 11, 2002

Another new letter from the president is up in the “Letters” section as “Newsletter #4.” The letter gives details about the next AORN congress and the next AORN Fox Valley Chapter meeting. Those details are now up in the “Events” section so be sure to check that too. Oh, and be sure to bring a new nurse with you to the next meeting.

Saturday, September 7, 2002

We have a new letter from the president for this month. You can find that in the “Letters” section as “Newsletter #3.” It’s an image format rather than a plain text document so I think most everyone here will be able to read it ok, but if not, send me an e-mail and I will look into it.

Friday, August 30, 2002

AORN Fox Valley Chapter wishes everyone an enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. For those interested in a little history lesson of Labor Day, check this article out. This web site update also serves as a reminder about the upcoming chapter meeting on Tuesday, September 17. Details are in the “Events” section.

Thursday, August 8, 2002

AORN Fox Valley Chapter wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable summer vacation, no matter where you are!

Thursday, July 25, 2002

The AORN Fox Valley Chapter website was awarded a prize! The website was entered into the 48th Annual DuPage County Fair’s Community Website contest (entries may be any local, non-profit, educational institution, or other local government agency or institution) and received third prize. The county fair’s website at www.dupagecountyfair.org, however, does not make mention of the awards, at least not yet. Congratulations to our webmaster!

Thursday, July 4, 2002

AORN Fox Valley Chapter wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday!

Wednesday, June 19, 2002

Apparently there is still confusion on our webmaster’s e-mail address. Our webmaster’s e-mail address is aornfoxvalley@aol.com. To clear any confusion, I will stop hyperlinking the e-mail address, so now users will have to manually type the e-mail address themselves in whatever e-mail program they use (AOL, LotusNotes, etc.). There has also been confusion for signing up for the newsletter. At this point, I don’t think there will be a simple form to sign up because it’s implementation is too difficult and technical support has been unhelpful.

If you would like to sign up for the newsletter (which is available on this website anyway under the “Letters” section), simply send an e-mail to the webmaster at aornfoxvalley@aol.com with your first name, last name, and e-mail address in the body of the e-mail. Again, those who have already signed up, do not need to sign up again. Also remember it is unnecessary to sign up if you check the website occasionally for newsletters because they will always be posted here. Lastly, if you have a question or are unclear about something, please read through the old news section. Any issues have been most likely addressed here already.

Friday, June 14, 2002

There are a couple of new pictures from AORN’s 49th Annual Congress in the “Events” section. Some of the pictures may be a slight download on 56k modems, but shouldn’t be too bad. For those thinking about congress next year, this is a nice preview.

Sunday, June 9, 2002

Our second newsletter from the president is up in the “Letters” section so take a look at that. Also, our Installation Banquet is coming up soon on June 18; more details about the banquet are in the “Events” section. On a small side note, if you have been trying to visit the website and you get an error message, I think this is a problem with the company we bought webspace with. I’ve seen a few problems with their server, but the website should normally appear so if you see an error message, please try again later.

Tuesday, June 4, 2002

I think I fixed the Netscape problem so the website should now look and function fine in both the latest versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Netscape’s Navigator. I have also modified many of the images so the website should load much faster now. :-)

Sunday, June 2, 2002

It has come to my attention the website looks a bit strange on the Netscape Navigator web browser. If possible, please try to view the website on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. If you don’t have Internet Explorer (which is highly improbable), you can download the latest version here. Users who view the site on America Online’s browser are safe though because it’s a version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. However, if you just have to view the website on Netscape’s web browser, please download the latest version here and click on “Downloads” on the right.

Friday, May 24, 2002

More updates to the “Events” section. Most of the 49th Annual AORN Congress Reports are up so those members that didn’t go can check them out and think about next year. Chapter meeting dates have also changed so get those calendars out.

Thursday, May 23, 2002

Welcome to AORN Fox Valley Chapter’s newly designed website! I hope everyone likes the new design because the old one was getting, well, old. I’ve condensed the menu selections, but they still work similarly — just, click on the item on the left for it’s contents to appear in this area. There are updates to most sections so just browse around. To see archived news, click on the link at the bottom. If you have suggestions for improvements to the website’s design or you just wanna give a compliment on such a cool site, please don’t hesitate to e-mail the webmaster.

I’m still figuring out how to do the newsletter sign-up page. For the time being, we’ll be using a temporary link to sign up for it. If you haven’t done so already, click here and put your first name, last name, and e-mail address (at which you’d like to get the newsletter delivered to) in the e-mail body to sign up. Those that have already signed-up, don’t need to again.

There is new information about the Installation Banquet in the “Events” section so be sure to check it out. If anybody is having problems with the map, let me know.

Tuesday, May 14, 2002

Welcome to AORN Fox Valley’s new website home! We finally got the website’s name and hosting business out of the way. Looking ahead, the domain name and hosting both last for one year but remember they were started at different times (the domain name was registered in mid-February and the hosting in early May).

On to the drawbacks of the new website: the counter and “Newsletter Subscription” / “Contact Us” forms do not work. The counter was based off America Online, so another method will have to be used for that. The newsletter and contact forms were based off America Online, so for the time being that feature will be unavailable. If need to sign up for the e-mail list still, send an e-mail here and remember to give your first name and last name in the e-mail body.

Also, I have been toying with the notion of a website revamp, based on the features members use most. Lastly, Happy (belated) Mother’s Day to all you mothers!

Wednesday, May 8, 2002

The Membership # and Passcode have been taken down because of security issues. Our chairman is going to resolve this issue shortly, so we’ll have access to AORN.org’s eChapter feature soon. In other news, AORN member Donna Preisler has been appointed to the AORN.org’s Web Task Force in updating their website. We wish her much success in her new position. Our “Events” page has also been updated with May’s meeting, so check that out too.

Lastly, if any of you were confused about my last web hosting comment, the bottom line is I have to resort to finding another host, although I have found a very cheap one, so be on the lookout for a new look. The reason some of you may feel behind in the news about this issue is that I am finding out stuff faster than I can post on the website, so it may be incomplete/lacking, although in the end, it will be worth it.

Friday, May 3, 2002

I was at an end-of-the-school-year picnic yesterday and I had a talk with a computer science major about web design. I told him I was looking for web hosting and it wasn’t working out so well. He recommended I go to Zone Edit to host my page. The good news is that it’s free. The bad news is that it doesn’t host actual webspace. Confused? I was. It basically acts as a way to relate the domain name and the host service, which relays back and asks where the webpages are so it can display them (this is called a DNS or Domain Name Service). So while I did sign with Zone Edit, I needed to find a place to store the webpages so everyone can see them. The ok-but-not-so-good news is that I can do this with a public IP address and the right software to host it, which means I can actually host the website straight off my computer! I do have a public IP address and I can install Apache, an http web hosting software application. But the bad news is that I will be moving back home this summer and won’t have a 24-hour-access to a network connection, and thus a public IP address. And I don’t think my mom would appreciate me being on the phone line on America Online 24 hours, 7 days a week, just to host the website :-)

Anyway, if you made it this far and followed some of the concepts I talked about, this means we’ll have to resort back to the original paid hosting idea, which costs approximately $60 per year. But some good news is that it looks like Hostyard is hosting now, which is strange because they stopped accepting new applicants 2 or 3 months ago. I signed up with them to ask for more information and a payment plan. Thanks for being patient with the website updates and new domain name hosting everybody, it’s very appreciated.

I received an e-mail reply from Kendra Keene, AORN.org’s Chapter Relations Coordinator about what eChapter exactly is:

Hi Richard, in answer to your question about eChapter we offer monthly live chats with topics such as: RNFA Billing, Meet Your New AORN President, Effective Lobbying just to name a few. We have bulletin boards with different topics of interest and also an e-mail listserv, or discussion group, so that eChapter members can talk about issues through e-mail. We are also working on providing education for contact hours. But the best way to see eChapter is to play on it. I am giving you a temporary password:

Go to www.aorn.org, click on Volunteer groups, then click on eChapter. A screen will appear. Enter this information: Membership #: ** Passcode: ** Then click on Go to eChapter!

eChapter was formed as a formal chapter in May 2001. This means that eChapter has all the rights of a regular chapter including voting at Congress. They also seated delegates in Anaheim. eChapter dues are currently $20 per year, and members can choose eChapter as your primary chapter. So take a look around and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Kendra Keene, MPH Chapter Relations Coordinator (303) 755-6304 ext. 250 (800) 755-2676 ext. 250 kkeene@aorn.org

There are a few problems with this. First, there is no “Volunteer Groups” link on AORN.org’s homepage. There is, however, a “Membership Groups” link, which does have an eChapter link on the left side. But after clicking on the link, the pop-up prompts the user for a Login Name and a Passcode. Unfortunately, the Memmbership Number does not work as a Login Name with the given Passcode. Thus, I can’t see what’s past the login screen. Note : Membership # and Passcode have been removed because of security issues.

Tuesday, April 30, 2002

Apparently, word is getting around about our little website. AORN.org has added it to their list of “AORN Chapter Websites” on their official website. You can see our name on the list here, then scroll down to the Illinois section in the list of states. The website is also listed under their eChapter Links, but you apparently need a Login and Password (which I’m not aware of me or the chapter having). The eChapter link is at the same link as above, but look to the left of the United States map and you should see “eChapter.” Click on that and a window pops-up, but without a login and password, this will remain a mystery for right now. More information on that is coming soon. In the meantime, here is the wonderful e-mail from Heather at AORN.org who put our link up on their website:

Date & Time: Apr 29, 2002, 18:00 First Name: Heather Last Name: Sarbaugh E-Mail Address: hpsarbaugh@aorn.org Question Or Comment: Your link has been added to the AORN Online - Chapter Web sites page, as well as the eChapter Links page. Please let me know when you change your web site address and I will updated it on my end. Thanks, Heather

In other news, April came to an end, so May’s “Events” are up and awaiting details on the meeting. It will be at Edward Hospital at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. Hope you can make it!

Friday, April 26, 2002

Finding web hosting is becoming a bit harder because Hostyard is no longer accepting new clients, but they referred another company, ICDSoft. Slow but steady progress is being made about claiming our own name on the web.

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

Dr. Iliana Sweis will be speaking about “Advances in Aesthetic Surgery” in Edward Hospital’s Education Room 309 at the April 16 meeting. The meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. You can see more in the “Events” section.

Monday, April 1, 2002

Bob Baxter, RN, CNOR and list owner of PERIOP in Everett, Washington has a mailing list about perioperative news and would be pleased if he had people sign up. The link to subscribe is on the left, underneath “Contact Us”. You can find out more on his website at www.periop.org.

Wednesday, March 20, 2002

The meeting with Thomas Kron, M.D. was fascinating as he gave his slide lecture, “How and Why I do Parathyroid Surgery” yesterday. A summary of the meeting, “Meeting Minutes”, will be available on the website from now on. February’s Meeting Minutes are up now in the new section on the left called “Meeting Minutes”, right under the “Events” link. Other month’s Meeting Minutes, especially March, will be available soon. Also, the website name “www.aornfoxvalley.org” has been purchased!

Unfortunately, the registration is a two-step process. After buying the name, we need to buy hosting, most probably from a company like Hostyard. However, the motion to buy the hosting was passed and our new website name could be “www.aornfoxvalley.org”. Information on April’s Events will be available soon and there is talk of the “Installation Banquet” on June 18 so check back often for that news.

Talk of a purchased domain name is still moving along; Power Pipe, a leading company that sells domain names, is offering domain space for $8.88 per year. Names such as “www.aornfoxvalley.org” or derivations with suffixes “.net” and “.com” are available as well. Also check out the new link in the menu on the left, NurseZone Magazine; there is a lot of good information at their website.
